Hunted House of Night Book 5 P C Cast Kristin Cast Books Reviews
Hunted is the fifth book out in the House of Night series by P.C. & Kristin Cast. I like the House of Night series. It's a great new take on a vampire story with young characters that should really appeal to young adult readers. Books 1-4 of the series deal with Zoey being Marked by the goddess Nyx and finding herself at the house of night. Self discovery, adventure, betrayal and murder all take place before Zoey finds herself in a dire predicament at the beginning of the fifth book.
With friends turned enemy and enemy turned friend, who can Zoey really trust? Does she have the power within herself to banish the evil that has been tormenting the school? Can she protect her friends and those whom are innocent from the temptation that surrounds them? Hunted is a tale of of further self discovery, action, adventure and with three boys vying for her attention, romance.
Those are the great parts about the book. While I don't like to hover on the not as fantastic parts, I do feel a small obligation to state the parts that I personally didn't like. Remember, this is a personal opinion. I don't always like the books that others like and the same is true in reverse.
Hunted seemed in some ways to slow down the series and in some ways to speed it up. It did seem that we were able to see a more grown up side of Zoey, which I really liked. Our antagonist in the book (I won't name names so as not to create a spoiler) is a fantastic antagonist and very, very well written. The parts where it slowed down, however, were the tiny parts. The movement parts. The entire story of the fifth book takes place in a very short amount of time and while I like description of movement and transition between places, it seemed that this actually slowed down the book in some places. Now there's slowing down for pacing sake and then there's just plain slowing down. In general, this book felt slow. Right up until the end; and a fantastic end it was!!
Another part that I had a hard time getting through was the reoccurance of typos. Occasional Darius's and Damian's names were reversed. Keep this in mind while reading the story and hopefully you'll be able to realize it in time and reverse it. Let me tell you, there are some parts when switching the names creates for some very awkward moments! I don't think I would mind so much if it happened occasionally, but the name switching and other typos happened a few more times that occasionally.
The description is so good this time that I don't know what else I have to add. After Neferet releases Kalona from his prison of earth at the end of the previous book, Zoey and her friends go into hiding in the tunnels with the red fledglings that Stevie Rae is now leading. Because of Zoey's special powers, Neferet and Kalona are determined to find a way to get to Zoey - since she is the only one that can stop them. With Stark turning into a red vampyre but playing for the evil side, Zoey is determined to find a way to help him - even if it means going back to the House of Night and into Neferet and Kalona's grasps.
After book three, the story got much more interesting. I like where the Cast's take the story with Kalona and Neferet. The first few books you think Neferet is good but you find out fast that this is not the case at all. I was so happy to see Stark back (even though he came back at the end of the other book). I loved him from the very first scene and his place in the story just keeps getting better. The end of the book is great and it definitely solidified my love for Stark and my wish that Heath and Erik would disappear from the picture (no such luck so far).
Overall, another great read. The Casts are definitely making the story more interesting by taking it outside of the school and the new characters are still great and a welcome change. Damien and the twins are still main characters but sometimes they get on my nervous and I would rather see Zoey interacting with the newer, more well written characters. This one leaves you hanging a bit more than the first ones did so I was happy to be able to pick up the sixth book right away.
So I made it to book five, and frankly I am still sort of stumped how I made it so far. Zoey is still utterly annoying and the fact that she's still the entitled little girl emotionally and yet the world against doesn't seem to revolve around her. Her friends still somehow manage to be her friends, and stick together, but there is a newcomer to the show.
Kalona, the ancient vampire, a spawn of Neferet is now after Zoey and possibly her next romance. What I don't seem to understand if Kalona supposedly makes all the girls/women around him so turned on to him alone, why isn't Neferet? Or is she, and I just failed to pick it up? Kalona actually could've made the story interesting, but the lack of depth and single mindedness just turned me off. There was so much potential in this character and yet again, with another character, it is squandered away. Kalona is supposed to be this badass, sexy vampire, however he's more of an overblown, glittery bean bag chair.
The one good part of this book is that Stevie Rae actually picks up some of the letdown of a book. She is the main reason I continued with the series, but I am not sure it was worth keeping going. The plot of this book was again, pretty simple and there wasn't much to it and the dynamic and depth just isn't there. To be honest, the only reason I am going to continue this is just the completionist in me. I honestly wouldn't really suggest this to a mature audience at all.
